Tree Species Available

This year the City of DeLand is offering five species that thrive in Central Florida’s climate and soil conditions:

  • Bald Cypress — A Florida native that handles wet and dry conditions. Excellent for properties near retention ponds or low-lying yards.
  • Southern Magnolia — A classic shade tree with large, fragrant white blooms. Evergreen canopy provides year-round privacy and curb appeal.
  • Sycamore — Fast-growing with broad leaves and distinctive mottled bark. Great for large yards that need shade quickly.
  • Live Oak — The signature tree of the South. Long-lived, wind-resistant, and one of the best shade trees you can plant in Volusia County.
  • Persimmon — A smaller ornamental tree that produces fall fruit and brilliant orange foliage. Perfect for smaller yards or as an accent tree.

Tips for Picking the Right Tree

Before you head to the giveaway, think about where the tree will go on your property. Consider overhead power lines, proximity to your home’s foundation, existing irrigation, and how much sun the planting location gets. Live Oaks and Southern Magnolias need room to spread — plan for a mature canopy of 40 to 60 feet. If your yard is smaller, Persimmon or Bald Cypress may be a better fit.

If you need help deciding where to plant, assessing root space, or want professional planting and mulching after you bring your new tree home, DeAngelo’s Land Services offers tree planting and transplanting throughout DeLand and all of Volusia County.

How to Get Your Free Trees

Download and complete the tree selection form from the City of DeLand website before you arrive. Trees go fast — the event is first-come, first-served starting at 8:00 AM sharp. Bring a valid proof of residency showing you live within the DeLand Utility Service area.
