When to Lay Sod in Florida: The Best and Worst Times of Year

The Short Answer: Late Spring Through Early Fall

Best time: March through October. Sweet spots:

  • April through June – ideal. Warm temps, rainy season starting, peak growth
  • July through September – doable but needs aggressive watering
  • October – still warm enough for good establishment

What About Winter?

November through February: grass goes semi-dormant. Root establishment is 2-3x slower. Frost risk exists. Doable if you can’t wait, but not ideal.

Establishment Timeline (Spring Install)

  • Week 1-2: Rooting. Water twice daily. Stay off it.
  • Week 2-3: Roots anchoring. Reduce to once daily.
  • Week 3-4: First mow at 4 inches. Normal watering schedule.
  • Week 4-6: Seams filling in. Normal foot traffic OK.

Pro Tip: Morning Installation

Sod sitting on a pallet in Florida sun can reach 140F inside. The faster it goes from pallet to ground to watered, the better. Professional crews get entire yards done in hours.
