How to Handle a Tree Too Close to Power Lines

If a tree on your property is growing into or near power lines, you have a serious safety issue. Electrical lines carry enough voltage to kill, and a single branch touching a live wire can cause fires, outages, and electrocution.

Never DIY Near Power Lines

This is not a DIY job under any circumstances. Even if a branch looks like it is just barely touching a line, the risk is too high. Electricity can arc through air, travel through wet wood, and energize metal tools from several feet away.

Every year, homeowners are seriously injured or killed trying to trim trees near power lines. Professional tree crews use insulated equipment, bucket trucks, and specialized training for this exact situation.

Who Is Responsible?

In Florida, utility companies like Duke Energy and FPL are generally responsible for maintaining clearance around their primary power lines (the high-voltage lines at the top of the pole). They will trim branches that threaten those lines at no cost to you.

However, the service drop — the line that runs from the pole to your house — is typically your responsibility. If a tree is growing into your service line, you need to hire a licensed tree service to handle it.

What to Do Right Now

  1. Call your utility company first. Report the tree and ask if it falls under their maintenance responsibility.
  2. Do not touch the tree or branches if they are in contact with any line.
  3. Keep everyone away from the area, including pets and children.
  4. If a line is down, call 911 immediately and stay at least 35 feet away.
  5. Hire a licensed, insured tree service for any work near your service drop.

Clearance Distances

Florida code requires specific clearance distances between trees and power lines. As a general rule, trees should be kept at least 10 feet away from power lines in all directions. Your utility company can provide specific requirements for your area.
